Los Poemas de Baltasar de Alcazar no fueron publicados por el escritor. Por fortuna, el pintor Francisco Pacheco realizo copias del unico manuscrito que se conservaba. Como escritor, demostr un brillante dominio de la mtrica. Los temas que caracterizan la obra potica de Alczar fueron un tanto triviales; por esta razn, a menudo se le etiqueta injustamente al autor como "e;poeta menor"e;. Estuvo muy influido por los poetas latinos Marcial y Horacio; de este ltimo tradujo diversas obras al castellano. Destacan su Dilogo entre dos perrillos, Consejos a una viuda y Cercada est mi alma de contrarios.
