515,95 kr. The Life of Tolstoy Later Years is a biography written by Aylmer Maude that explores the later years of the famous Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy. The book provides a detailed account of Tolstoy's life after the publication of his magnum opus, War and Peace, and his subsequent spiritual awakening that led him to renounce his aristocratic lifestyle and embrace a life of poverty and simplicity. Maude delves into Tolstoy's philosophical and religious beliefs, including his advocacy for nonviolence and his rejection of organized religion. The book also examines Tolstoy's tumultuous relationship with his wife, Countess Sophia Tolstoy, and his strained relationships with his children. Maude draws on a variety of sources, including Tolstoy's own writings and letters, to provide a comprehensive and engaging portrait of one of the most influential writers of the 19th century.1910. Maude was a translator of many of Tolstoy's works and the writer of his biography, of which this is the second volume. Tolstoy is considered one of the greatest of all novelists with his collected works numbering 90 and War and Peace and Anna Karenina being counted as his two masterpieces. After finishing Anna Karenina Tolstoy renounced all his earlier works and wrote Conversion to explain his doctrines. Resurrection was his last major novel. By this time, Tolstoy started to himself more as a sage and moral leader than an artist. In 1901 the Russian Orthodox Church excommunicated the author. Tolstoy became seriously ill and he recuperated in Crimea. He then left his estate to his disciple Vladimir Chertkov so as to follow the urge to live as a wandering ascetic, Tolstoy died of pneumonia on November 20, 1910, at a remote railway junction.
