Mais quoique le rôle de l'algèbre ne soit alors que secondaire, elle n'en a pas moins toujours une part nécessaire dans la solution complète de la question, en sorte que le calcul des fonctions directes doit continuer à être, par sa nature, la base fondamentale de toute l'analyse mathématique. Nous devons donc, avant d'aller plus loin, considérer, d'une manière générale, la composition rationnelle de ce calcul, et le degré de développement auquel il est parvenu aujourd'hui.
