214,95 kr. The Westcotes is a novel written by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, first published in 1917. The story is set in the fictional village of Lantrig, located in the Cornish countryside, and follows the lives of the Westcote family. The Westcotes are a wealthy family who have recently moved to Lantrig from London. The family consists of Mr. Westcote, his wife, and their two daughters, Maud and Monica. They are immediately met with suspicion and disdain from the locals, who view them as outsiders and interlopers. The novel explores the relationships between the Westcotes and the people of Lantrig, as well as the internal struggles within the family itself. Maud is engaged to a local man, but is torn between her love for him and her loyalty to her family. Monica, on the other hand, is more interested in the glamour and excitement of London society than the quiet life of Lantrig. As the story unfolds, the Westcotes become embroiled in a scandal involving a local farmer, and their reputation is further tarnished. The family must navigate the complex social dynamics of the village and confront their own personal demons in order to find a way forward. The Westcotes is a nuanced exploration of class, identity, and the tensions between tradition and modernity. Quiller-Couch's vivid descriptions of the Cornish landscape and the intricate social hierarchies of the village make for a rich and engaging read. But the scene impressed her sharply, and she carried away a very lively picture of it. The old Roman villa had been built about a hollow square open to the sky, and this square now formed the great hall of Bayfield. Deep galleries of two stories surrounded it, in place of the old colonnaded walk. Out of these opened the principal rooms of the house, and above them, upon a circular lantern of clear glass, was arched a painted dome. Sheathed on the outside with green weather-tinted copper, and surmounted by a gilt ball, this dome (which could be seen from the Axcester High Street when winter stripped the Bayfield elms) gave the building something of the appearance of an observatory. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
