83,95 kr. Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope (9 February 1863 - 8 July 1933), was an English novelist and playwright. He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels but he is remembered best for only two books: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works, "minor classics" of English literature, are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance. Zenda has inspired many adaptations, most notably the 1937 Hollywood movie of the same name.

273,95 kr. The Indiscretion of the Duchess is a novel written by Anthony Hope that tells the story of two ladies, a nobleman, and a necklace. The Duchess of Datchet, a wealthy and beautiful woman, becomes entangled in a scandalous affair with Lord Henry Norland, a notorious womanizer. Meanwhile, Lady Mary Carlisle, a virtuous and loyal friend of the Duchess, tries to uncover the truth behind the Duchess's indiscretions. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the necklace in question is at the center of the scandal, and the characters' lives are forever changed by their involvement with it. This novel is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and intrigue set in the high society of Victorian England.1894. Hope was a barrister who gave up the law after the success of his novel The Prisoner of Zenda. This book begins: In accordance with many most excellent precedents, I might begin by claiming the sympathy due to an orphan alone in the world. I might even summon my unguided childhood and the absence of parental training to excuse my faults and extenuate my indiscretions. But the sympathy which I should thus gain would be achieved, I fear, by something very like false pretenses. For my solitary state sat very lightly upon me-the sad events which caused it being softened by the influence of time and habit-and had the recommendation of leaving me, not only free to manage my own life as I please, but also possessed of a competence which added power to my freedom. Three couples are closely described, and the author writes in the most uncompromising English and discusses some of the most intricate problems of "double harness." Uncontrollable temper, increasing idealism, love of pleasure, consideration of worldly status, claims of children, sympathetic friendships, etc., etc., are a few of the problems that are finally solved into a good story.

Anyhow some men never do. Why, I've sat behind Huntley and seen his hand tremble like our old friend the aspen leaf-and that when he was Attorney-General!" "Lord!" was Arthur's despairing comment; because a malady which did not spare an Attorney-General must surely be unconquerable by lesser folk. "But I expect it's not quite the same sort," Norton Ward went on, smiling. "It's rather like falling in love, I expect. A man's excited every time he falls in love, but I don't think it's the same sort of excitement as he suffers when he falls in love for the first time-I mean badly." Now the last word of this observation so struck Arthur that he forgot all[...]."

88,95 - 118,95 kr. "Inkpat!" She shot out the word in a bitter playfulness, making it serve for the climax of her complaints. Hobart Gaynor repeated the word-if it could be called a word-after his companion in an interrogative tone. "Yes, just hopeless inkpat, and there's an end of it!" Mrs. Maxon leant back as far as the unaccommodating angles of the office chair allowed, looking at her friend and counsellor with a faint yet rather mischievous smile on her pretty face. In the solicitor's big, high, bare room she seemed both small and very dainty. Her voice had trembled a little, but she made a brave effort at gaiety as she explained her cryptic word. "When a thing's running in your head day and night, week after week, and month after month, you can't use that great long word you lawyers use. Besides, it's so horribly impartial." She pouted over this undesirable quality. A light broke on Gaynor, and he smiled. "Oh, you mean incompatibility?" "That's it, Hobart. But you must see it's far too long, besides being, as I say, horribly impartial. So I took to calling it by a pet name of my own. That makes it come over to my side. Do you see?"

118,95 kr. Anthony Hope's novel, "Half a Hero," is a study of political and social life in the English colony of New Lindsey, which may possibly be New Zealand. The half hero is one Medland, leader of the radicals, who by a coalition comes into power as premier. He had been a common laborer, had risen by integrity and energy, and although unpolished of manners shows qualities that make the true man. The humor of the situation arises from the necessity forced upon the snobbish family of the titled governor to receive him and his daughter on terms of social equality. Later on it appears that there has been something "irregular" about Medland's marriage, but when disgrace is threatened and he has the chance to silence his enemies by a skilful distribution of spoils he refuses to submit and dares political death and social obloquy rather than sacrifice his manliness. The end of the story is tragic.

108,95 kr. The story of The God in the Car is of a very special character. Here we find the large canvas of serious life brushed over with a firm hand, relentless in general outlines and details-telling the tragedy of a woman's love and the price that ambition pays for its own gratification. It is said that a certain English colonial statesman suggested the character of Rushton; we do not know, nor do we care. What we do know, however, is that in this story we meet not one or two, but several, characters that are worth knowing, and whom we will remember for many a day. Juggernaut, "The God in the Car," is the incarnation of all the qualities and shortcomings of what the French are pleased to call the strugforlifer, and under the wheels of his rolling throne he crushes the woman that loves him, relentless of the ruin and misery he leaves behind. Mr. Hope has shown that quantity is not always detrimental to quality

98,95 - 183,95 kr. COMMON opinion said that Lord Lynborough ought never to have had a peerage and forty thousand a year; he ought to have had a pound a week and a back bedroom in Bloomsbury. Then he would have become an eminent man; as it was, he turned out only a singularly erratic individual. So much for common opinion. Let no more be heard of its dull utilitarian judgments! There are plenty of eminent men-at the moment, it is believed, no less than seventy Cabinet and ex-Cabinet Ministers (or thereabouts)-to say nothing of Bishops, Judges, and the British Academy-and all this in a nook of the world! (And the world too is a point!) Lynborough was something much more uncommon; it is not, however, quite easy to say what. Let the question be postponed; perhaps the story itself will answer it. He started life-or was started in it-in a series of surroundings of unimpeachable orthodoxy-Eton, Christ Church, the Grenadier Guards. He left each of these schools of mental culture and bodily discipline, not under a cloud-that metaphor would be ludicrously inept-but in an explosion. That, having been thus shot out of the first, he managed to enter the second-that, having been shot out of the second, he walked placidly into the third-that, having been shot out of the third, he suffered no apparent damage from his repeated propulsions-these are matters explicable only by a secret knowledge of British institutions. His father was strong, his mother came of stock even stronger; he himself-Ambrose Caverly as he then was-was very popular, and extraordinarily handsome in his unusual outlandish style.

- An Episode In The Story Of An Ancient House
374,95 kr. Tristram of Blent is a novel written by Anthony Hope, published in 1901. The novel is an episode in the long history of the house, which has been passed down through generations of the Blent family. The main character, Tristram, is a young man who inherits the estate of Blent from his uncle. Tristram is an idealistic and somewhat naive young man, who is determined to restore the estate to its former glory. However, he soon finds himself embroiled in a web of intrigue and deception, as he discovers that his uncle's death may not have been accidental, and that there are those who would stop at nothing to gain control of the estate. As Tristram delves deeper into the secrets of Blent, he becomes increasingly entangled in a complex web of family rivalries, political intrigue, and romantic entanglements. Along the way, he must confront his own weaknesses and limitations, and learn to navigate the treacherous waters of English society.Tristram of Blent is a classic example of the English country house novel, a genre that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
