The Opinions of Anatole France is a collection of essays and speeches by the renowned French writer Anatole France. The book covers a wide range of topics, from literature and art to politics and religion. France's opinions on these subjects are expressed in his characteristic style, which is marked by wit, irony, and a deep appreciation for the complexities of human nature. The book is divided into several sections, each of which focuses on a different aspect of France's thought. In the section on literature, for example, he discusses the importance of irony and satire in the works of great writers like Voltaire and Swift. In the section on politics, he explores the dangers of nationalism and the need for international cooperation. And in the section on religion, he offers a skeptical and often humorous take on the role of organized religion in society.Throughout the book, France's opinions are informed by his deep knowledge of history and his commitment to humanism. He is a passionate defender of individual freedom and human dignity, and his writing is marked by a profound sense of empathy for those who have suffered at the hands of oppressive regimes and social structures.Overall, The Opinions of Anatole France is a fascinating and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in the life and thought of one of the most important writers of the early 20th century.1922. Famous Modern Ghost Stories, a collection of ghost stories written by notable authors, most of whom were born in the 1800's, was selected by Dorothy Scarborough and published in 1920. 'Modern' is retained in the title of this book out of respect for Dorothy Scarborough's work in writing and editing, even though many of the stories are now over 100 years old. The collection, however, is notable as a collection of many of the best ghost stories of the time, written by authors who pioneered in the field. Dorothy Scarborough (1878-1935), an American writer of folk culture, cotton farming, and ghost stories, graduated from Baylor University, studied at the University of Chicago and Oxford University and received a doctorate of literature from Columbia University in 1917, where she taught until her death in 1935. Her dissertation The Supernatural in Modern English, regarded as a basic information source was published in 1917 and remains in print today. In addition to teaching and writing she edited Famous Modern Ghost Stories and several other collections of ghost stories.

The Life of Joan of Arc V1 is a biographical book written by French author Anatole France. The book chronicles the life of Joan of Arc, a French heroine who played a pivotal role in the Hundred Years' War between France and England. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which covers a different period in Joan's life. The book starts with Joan's childhood and her visions of saints and angels, which ultimately led her to become a warrior and a leader of the French army. The book also covers Joan's trial and execution, as well as the aftermath of her death. Throughout the book, France provides a detailed and vivid account of Joan's life, using historical documents and his own research to paint a picture of this remarkable woman. The book is a tribute to Joan's courage, faith, and determination, and serves as a reminder of her enduring legacy as a symbol of French nationalism and female empowerment.1908. Part One of Two. Anatole France is the pen name of Jacques Anatole Francois Thibault, French novelist, poet, critic and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. A history of the French saint and martyr based on the form and substance of ancient documents. France writes in the Introduction that: In the course of my story I have related many incidents which, without having a direct relation to Jeanne, reveal the spirit, the morals, and the beliefs of her time. These incidents are usually of a religious order. They must necessarily be so, for Jeanne's story-and I cannot repeat it too often-is the story of a saint, just like that of Colette of Corbie, or of Catherine of Sienna. The Contents in this volume range from her Childhood through the Rise of the Legend. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. Anatole France is the pen name of Jacques Anatole Francois Thibault, French novelist, poet, critic and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. From the Introduction: Anatole...but a comparatively young man, and a married man, when he imagined Sylvestre Bonnard; we might, in short, refuse to believe the book not strictly autobiographical, but for the reflection that its other personages live with the same vividness for us as does the Member of the Institute. Therese, the grim old housekeeper, so simple and faithful; Madame and Monsieur de Gabry, those delightful friends; the glorious, brutal, heroic Uncle Victor; the perfectly lovable Jeanne: these figures are not less sympathetic in their several roles.
