It is necessary that our world obtain a better idea of what the concept of human dignity entails. All the ills of society ¿ crime, violence, child neglect, abuse of women, alcoholism, drug abuse, poverty, greed, polution of the environment and discrimination against minorities ¿ boil down to a disregard of human dignity. Christians believe that God created man in his image. That means that God intended man to be holy, without sin, righteous and filled with love. Unfortunately, the Fall destroyed much of this divine image, but enough of it is left to prevent mankind from becoming totally diabolic. Therefore, every human being, as a creature of God, possesses human dignity and it is the duty of every Christian to respect and promote that dignity. The Church, as the body of Jesus Christ, is called upon to be the space in which human beings can regain their dignity. This book explores the concept of human dignity from a biblical perspective, but also takes the insights of psychology into account. It is meant for all committed Christians who would like to render a service to their fellow human beings and to honour God in the process.

We live in a world where there is a definite need for pastoral care and counselling. Many communities experience high levels of crime, violence, prostitution, drug abuse, child neglect and other social evils. A large number of people suffer from psychological disorders. Psychologists and social workers render sterling service in this regard. Unfortunately, many of these problems, disorders and social ills contain a spiritual or religious component and these professionals are not always equipped to deal with this aspect. It is, therefore, necessary to provide a biblical view of all these problem areas of mankind and give guidelines on how to apply the message of the Gospel to people who suffer. Various spiritual and life problems are discussed and answers and solutions are provided. This study guide is meant for all Christians who feel the need to aid those in trouble ¿ pastors, members of church councils, leaders of Bible study groups and youth leaders. They are often the first line of defense against the various ailments of society.

John of Patmos, the prophet who wrote Revelation, had his first vision of God¿s throne on 30 January AD 96 and his last vision of the New Jerusalem during December AD 96. It is possible to date most of his visions on account of his descriptions of the starry skies through a reconstruction of the heavens above Patmos and Ephesus with a computerised astronomical programme. John also mentioned thunderstorms, locusts, the sea, earthquakes and a volcano. He read spiritual messages in these against the background of the Hebrew Scriptures and his experience as a Christian prophet in the Roman Empire, while enjoying the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Certain commentators expect to find predictions about the far future in Revelation. John made it clear, though, that he only explained the difficulties Christians were facing at that time and his expectations for the immediate future. Predictions about later centuries would have had no value for his original readers. On the other hand, his message is timeless and still applicable to our time. This book is meant for all serious Bible students ¿ lay people and theologians, who are bound to find original and new insights into the New Testament.
