648,95 kr. Demonstrates how harmonic analysis can provide penetrating insights into deep aspects of modern analysis. This book presents an introduction to the subject as a whole and an overview of those branches of harmonic analysis that are relevant to the Kakeya conjecture.

648,95 kr. Deals with the differential Galois theory of linear homogeneous differential equations, whose differential Galois groups are algebraic matrix groups. This work is suitable as a textbook at the advanced graduate level.

648,95 kr. Contains the developments in a central theme of research on analysis of one complex variable. This book includes material that is based on lectures at the University of Michigan. It clarifies how certain basic properties of the space at hand are reflected in the geometry of interpolating and sampling sequences.

- Polyhedral Reduction Theories, Algorithms, and Applications
648,95 kr. Starting from classical arithmetical questions on quadratic forms, this book takes the reader step by step through the connections with lattice sphere packing and covering problems. As a model for polyhedral reduction theories of positive definite quadratic forms, it presents Minkowski's classical theory.

This study is based on singularity theory: the infinite-dimensional space of curves is subdivided by the discriminant hypersurfaces into parts consisting of generic curves of the same type.

648,95 kr. Modern model theory began with Morley's categoricity theorem. Over the years Shelah made great strides in extending this result to infinitary logic. Zilber developed similar techniques of infinitary model theory to study complex exponentiation. This book offers a systematic exposition of this work.

808,95 kr. Offers an introduction to the perturbative path integral for gauge theories (in particular, topological field theories) in Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism and to some of its applications. The book is oriented toward a graduate mathematical audience and does not require any prior physics background.

648,95 kr. Examines in some depth two important classes of point processes, determinantal processes and 'Gaussian zeros', i.e., zeros of random analytic functions with Gaussian coefficients. This title presents a primer on modern techniques on the interface of probability and analysis.

648,95 kr. Deals with the interplay of computational commutative algebra and the theory of convex polytopes. This title centers around a special class of ideals in a polynomial ring: the class of toric ideals. They are characterized as those prime ideals that are generated by monomial differences or as the defining ideals of toric varieties.

Image compression, the Navier-Stokes equations, and detection of gravitational waves are three seemingly unrelated scientific problems that, remarkably, can be studied from one perspective. The notion that unifies the three problems is that of "e;oscillating patterns"e;, which are present in many natural images, help to explain nonlinear equations, and are pivotal in studying chirps and frequency-modulated signals. The first chapter of this book considers image processing, more precisely algorithms of image compression and denoising. This research is motivated in particular by the new standard for compression of still images known as JPEG-2000. The second chapter has new results on the Navier-Stokes and other nonlinear evolution equations. Frequency-modulated signals and their use in the detection of gravitational waves are covered in the final chapter. In the book, the author describes both what the oscillating patterns are and the mathematics necessary for their analysis. It turns out that this mathematics involves new properties of various Besov-type function spaces and leads to many deep results, including new generalizations of famous Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Poincare inequalities. This book is based on the "e;Dean Jacqueline B. Lewis Memorial Lectures"e; given by the author at Rutgers University. It can be used either as a textbook in studying applications of wavelets to image processing or as a supplementary resource for studying nonlinear evolution equations or frequency-modulated signals. Most of the material in the book did not appear previously in monograph literature.

648,95 kr. First-passage percolation (FPP) is a fundamental model in probability theory that has a wide range of applications to other scientific areas (growth and infection in biology, optimization in computer science, disordered media in physics), as well as other areas of mathematics, including analysis and geometry. FPP was introduced in the 1960s as a random metric space. Although it is simple to define, and despite years of work by leading researchers, many of its central problems remain unsolved. In this book, the authors describe the main results of FPP, with two purposes in mind. First, they give self-contained proofs of seminal results obtained until the 1990s on limit shapes and geodesics. Second, they discuss recent perspectives and directions including (1) tools from metric geometry, (2) applications of concentration of measure, and (3) related growth and competition models. The authors also provide a collection of old and new open questions. This book is intended as a textbook for a graduate course or as a learning tool for researchers.
