He was pretending he was interested, but Joe knew he was really making sure there were no aces hidden inside.     Not yet, Joe thought.

He wanted me to become a lawyer or a doctor. “These are the good jobs, Baljit. Never mind the football. If you dream it must be for real. Why can’t you dream about things that really matter?” That was his usual reply. I was going to have to do something to convince him that I was serious.
