Modern software systems are becoming more complex in many ways and are having to cope with a growing number of abnormal situations which, in turn, are increasingly complex to handle. Exception handling is an essential part of software and system architectures and a crucial element in the tool-set that enables the building of resilient, robust and safe software systems. Two ECOOP workshops on exception handling were held in 2003 and 2005. This book is primarily an outcome of these two events - several workshop participants as well as a number of other leading researchers in the field were invited to contribute a chapter each.This book is composed of five parts; the first four deal with topics related to exception handling in the context of programming languages, concurrency and operating systems, pervasive computing systems, and requirements and specifications. The last part focuses on case studies, experimentation and qualitative comparisons. The 16 coherently written chapters by leading researchers competently address a wide range of issues in exception handling.

Software reuse as an umbrella concept has been around for several decades. Over time, new techniques and approaches have been proposed to implement the concept, from libraries of reusable assets to product lines, to generative methods. These latter techniques are mostly used in intra-organizational reuse, and require considerable formal knowledge over the evolution of technology and required functionality in a domain over several years. On the other end of the spectrum, extra-organizational reuse is based on reuse of off-the-shelf (OTS) software (both open and closed source, acquired for free or for a fee). Here, a limited investment and immediate availability of the assets have widely spread the approach. On the other hand, the reusing organization has no control on the evolution of the functionality and assumptions of the asset. Even when the assets are open source, they are seldom modified. The theme for this ninth meeting is the reuse of off-the-shelf (OTS) components and related problems: * Documentation of OTS components * Processes to identify and select OTS components * Integration and evolution problems * Reliability and security of OTS components and legal issues * Interaction with the developer community or with the vendor The proceedings you are holding cover these issues as well as development and use of product lines, variability modeling, aspect-based development, composition of components and services. This volume contains papers presented at the first joint conference of the Software Pr- ess Workshop and the International Workshop on Software Process Simulation and Modeling (SPW/ProSim 2006) held in Shanghai, P.R. China, on May 20-21, 2006. The theme of SPW/ProSim 2006 was "e;Software Process Change - Meeting the Challenge."e; Software developers are under ever-increasing pressure to deliver their products more quickly and with higher levels of quality. These demands are set in a dynamic context of frequently changing technologies, limited resources and globally distributed development teams. At the same time, global competition is forcing - ganizations that develop software to cut costs by rationalizing processes, outsourcing part or all of their activities, reusing existing software in new or modified applications and evolving existing systems to meet new needs, while still minimizing the risk of projects failing to deliver. To address these difficulties, new or modified processes are emerging, including agile methods and plan-based product line development. Open Source, COTS and community-developed software are becoming more popular. Outsourcing coupled with 24/7 development demands well-defined processes and interfaces to support the coordination of organizationally and geographically separated teams. All of these challenges combine to increase demands on the efficiency and effectiveness of so- ware processes.

Welcome to the proceedings of PATMOS 2005, the 15th in a series of international workshops.PATMOS2005wasorganizedbyIMECwithtechnicalco-sponsorshipfrom the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. Over the years, PATMOS has evolved into an important European event, where - searchers from both industry and academia discuss and investigate the emerging ch- lenges in future and contemporary applications, design methodologies, and tools - quired for the developmentof upcominggenerationsof integrated circuits and systems. The technical program of PATMOS 2005 contained state-of-the-art technical contri- tions, three invited talks, a special session on hearing-aid design, and an embedded - torial. The technical program focused on timing, performance and power consumption, as well as architectural aspects with particular emphasis on modeling, design, char- terization, analysis and optimization in the nanometer era. The Technical Program Committee, with the assistance of additional expert revi- ers, selected the 74 papers to be presented at PATMOS. The papers were divided into 11 technical sessions and 3 poster sessions. As is always the case with the PATMOS workshops, the review process was anonymous, full papers were required, and several reviews were carried out per paper. Beyond the presentations of the papers, the PATMOS technical program was - riched by a series of speeches offered by world class experts, on important emerging research issues of industrial relevance. With SPLC 2005 we celebrated the formation of a new conference series, the International Software Product Line Conference (SPLC) which results from the "e;uni?cation"e; of the former series of three SPLC (Software Product Line) Con- rences launched in 2000 in the USA, and the former series of ?ve PFE (Product Family Engineering) Workshops started in 1996 in Europe. SPLC is nowthe premier forum for the growing community of software p- duct line practitioners, researchers, and educators. SPLC o?ers a unique - portunity to present and discuss the most recent experiences, ideas, innovations, trends,andconcernsintheareaofsoftwareproductlineengineering andtobuild aninternationalnetworkofproductlinechampions.AninternationalSPLCSt- ring Committee has been established and it is the wish of this committee that from 2005 on, the SPLC conference will be held yearly in Europe, America, or Asia. The technical program of SPLC 2005 included. - two keynotes from David Weiss (Avaya, USA) and Jan Bosch (Nokia, F- land), both leading experts with academic and industrial insights; - 17 full and 3 short research papers organized around the following themes: feature modeling, re-engineering, strategies, validation, scoping and arc- tecture, and product derivation; - eight experience reports describing commercial application of product line practices; - two panels focused on special topics in product line practice and product line research; - tool demonstrations; - aHallofFamesessionthatcontinuedtheSPLCtraditioninaslightlyrevised format. In addition, the technical program was preceded by a tutorial and workshop day that included ten half-day tutorials presented by well-recognized experts and ?ve workshops on speci?c areas of product line research.

It is always a special honor to chair the European Dependable Computing C- ference (EDCC). EDCC has become one of the well-established conferences in the ?eld of dependability in the European research area. Budapest was selected as the host of this conference due to its traditions in organizing international scienti?c events and its traditional role of serving as a meeting point between East and West. EDCC-5 was the ?fth in the series of these high-quality scienti?c conf- ences. In addition to the overall signi?cance of such a pan-European event, this year's conference was a special one due to historic reasons. The roots of EDCC date back to the moment when the Iron Curtain fell. Originally, two groups of scientists from di?erent European countries in Western and Eastern Europe - who were active in research and education related to dependability created a - joint forum in order to merge their communities as early as in 1989. This trend has continued up to today. This year's conference was the ?rst one where the overwhelming majority of the research groups belong to the family of European nations united in the European Union. During the past 16 years we observed that the same roots in all the professional, cultural and scienti?c senses led to a seamless integration of these research communities previously separated ar- ?cially for a long time. EDCC has become one of the main European platforms to exchange new - searchideasinthe?eldofdependability.

Middleware provides an integration framework for multiple and potentially - verse computing platforms. It allows developers to engineer distributed appli- tions more easily, providing abstractions and primitives to handle distribution and coordination. Middlewareisconstantlyfacingnewchallenges.Today'sadvancesincomp- ing, including development of pervasive applications, exacerbates the diversity problem, introducing variations not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of environments and device characteristics. Software engineers are the- fore challenged both in the area of the development of new and scalable m- dleware systems, where open, heterogeneous, component-based platforms should provide richer functionality and services, and in the area of application devel- ment, where tools to simplify the use of middleware solutions are necessary. Software Engineering and Middleware is the premier workshop for the - search and practice community of software engineering working in both areas to presentanddiscussnewideasinthis?eld.SEM2004wasthefourthinternational workshop on software engineering and middleware of the EDO/SEM workshop series. Previous workshops of this series were successfully held in 2002, 2000 and 1999. Most of the proceedings have been published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.

Embedded systems now include a very large proportion of the advanced products designed in the world, spanning transport (avionics, space, automotive, trains), electrical and electronic appliances (cameras, toys, televisions, home appliances, audio systems, and cellular phones), process control (energy production and distribution, factory automation and optimization), telecommunications (satellites, mobile phones and telecom networks), and security (e-commerce, smart cards), etc. The extensive and increasing use of embedded systems and their integration in everyday products marks a significant evolution in information science and technology. We expect that within a short timeframe embedded systems will be a part of nearly all equipment designed or manufactured in Europe, the USA, and Asia. There is now a strategic shift in emphasis for embedded systems designers: from simply achieving feasibility, to achieving optimality. Optimal design of embedded systems means targeting a given market segment at the lowest cost and delivery time possible. Optimality implies seamless integration with the physical and electronic environment while respecting real-world constraints such as hard deadlines, reliability, availability, robustness, power consumption, and cost. In our view, optimality can only be achieved through the emergence of embedded systems as a discipline in its own right.

FIDJI 2004 was an international forum for researchers and practitioners int- estedinthe advancesin,andapplicationsof,softwareengineeringfordistributed application development. Concerning the technologies, the workshop focused on "e;Java-related"e; technologies. It was an opportunity to present and observe the latest research, results, and ideas in these areas. Allpaperssubmittedtothisworkshopwerereviewedbyatleasttwomembers of the International Program Committee. Acceptance was based primarily on originality and contribution. We selected, for these post-workshop proceedings, 11 papers amongst 22 submitted, a tutorial and two keynotes. FIDJI2004aimedatpromotingascienti?capproachtosoftwareengineering. The scope of the workshop included the following topics: - design of distributed applications - development methodologies for software and system engineering - UML-based development methodologies - development of reliable and secure distributed systems - component-based development methodologies - dependability support during system life cycle - fault tolerance re?nement, evolution and decomposition - atomicity and exception handling in system development - software architectures, frameworks and design patterns for developing d- tributed systems - integration of formal techniques in the development process - formal analysis and grounding of modelling notation and techniques (e. g. , UML, metamodelling) - supporting the security and dependability requirements of distributed app- cations in the development process - distributed software inspection - refactoring methods - industrial and academic case studies - development and analysis tools The organization of such a workshop represents an important amount of work.

The UML 2004 conference was held in Lisbon (Portugal) from October 11 through October 15, 2004. It was the seventh conference in a series of annual events that started in 1998. UML has rapidly become one of the leading venues to present and discuss the development of object-oriented modeling. In order to re?ect the changes in the ?eld, the UML conference series will be continued from 2005 onwards under the name MODELS (Model Driven En- neering, Languages and Systems). Inane?orttomakethisyear'sconferencemoreusefulande?ectiveforawider community, including academics and practitioners working in areas related to UML and modeling in general, a set of satellite events was organized, including workshopsdedicatedtospeci?cresearchtopics,anindustrytrack,aposter/demo session, and a tools exhibit. This volume is a compilation of the contributions presented at these satellite events. Workshops at UML 2004 took place during the ?rst three days of the conference(fromOctober10to12). Followingthetraditionofprevious UML conferences, UML 2004workshopsprovidedacollaborativeforumforgroups of (typically 15 to 30) participants to exchange recent or preliminary results, to conduct intensive discussions on a particular topic, or to coordinate e?orts between representatives of a technical community. Ten workshops were held, covering a variety of hot topics, which have been covered in the workshop - ports contained in this volume. Each workshop lasted for a full day. A novelty with respect to previous UML conferences was the inclusion of a Doctoral Symposium, which was well received, to provide an explicit space for young - searchers developing their thesis on some aspect related to UML.

The 30 revised full papers were carefully selected for inclusion in the book and are presented along with an educators's and a doctorial symposium section comprising additional 13 short articles. The papers are organized in topical sections representing the various workshops

Started on the inspired initiative of Prof. Alfred Strohmeier back in 1996, and spawned from the annual Ada-Europe conference that had previously run for 16 consecutive years, the International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies celebrated this year its tenth anniversary by going to York, UK, where the ?rst series of technical meetings on Ada were held in the 1970s. Besides being a beautiful and historical place in itself, York also hosts the Depa- ment of Computer Science of the local university, whose Real-Time Group has been tremendously in?uential in shaping the Ada language and in the progress on real-time computing worldwide. This year's conference was therefore put together under exc- lent auspices, in a very important year for the Ada community in view of the forthc- ing completion of the revision process that is upgrading the language standard to face the challenges of the new millennium. The conference took place on June 20-24, 2005. It was as usual sponsored by Ada-Europe, the European federation of national Ada societies, in cooperation with ACM SIGAda. The conference was organized by selected staff of the University of York teamed up with collaborators from various places in Europe, in what turned out to be a very effective instance of distributed collaborative processing. The conference also enjoyed the generous support of 11 industrial sponsors.

As software systems become ubiquitous, the issues of dependability become more and more crucial. Given that solutions to these issues must be considered from the very beginning of the design process, it is reasonable that dependability is addressed at the architectural level. This book comes as a result of an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures and dependability.This state-of-the-art survey contains 16 carefully selected papers originating from the Twin Workshops on Architecting Dependable Systems (WADS 2004) accomplished as part of the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2004) in Edinburgh, UK and of the International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2004) in Florence, Italy. The papers are organised in topical sections on architectures for dependable services, monitoring and reconfiguration in software architectures, dependability support for software architectures, architectural evaluation, and architectural abstractions for dependability.

Embedded systems are ubiquitous. They appear in cell phones, microwave ovens, refrigerators, consumer electronics, cars, and jets. Some of these embedded s- tems are safety- or security-critical such as in medical equipment, nuclear plants, and X-by-wire control systems in naval, ground and aerospace transportation - hicles. With the continuing shift from hardware to software, embedded systems are increasingly dominated by embedded software. Embedded software is complex. Its engineering inherently involves a mul- disciplinary interplay with the physics of the embedding system or environment. Embedded software also comes in ever larger quantity and diversity. The next generation of premium automobiles will carry around one gigabyte of binary code. The proposed US DDX submarine is e?ectively a ?oating embedded so- ware system, comprising 30 billion lines of code written in over 100 programming languages. Embedded software is expensive. Cost estimates are quoted at around US$15- 30 per line (from commencement to shipping). In the defense realm, costs can range up to $100, while for highly critical applications, such as the Space Shuttle, the cost per line approximates $1,000. In view of the exponential increase in complexity, the projected costs of future embedded software are staggering.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Energy Efficient Data Centers, E2DC 2013, held in Berkeley, CA, USA, in May 2013; co-located with SIGCOMM e-Energy 2013. The 8 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Foundations of Health Information Engineering and Systems, FHIES 2013, held in Macau, China, in August 2013. The 19 revised full papers presented together with 1 invited talk in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 22 submissions. Also, the crucial application domain of telecom services and service architectures was investigated. The ?ve workshops were selected out of eight submissions. During the - lection process we encouraged the merging of workshop proposals with similar scope. We are grateful to all workshop organizers. Without their valuable ideas and support the workshop sessions at ICSOC as well as this volume would not have been possible.
