Bogen viser, at netop konkurrencerne bliver bærere af værdier, som det nyslåede demokrati efter systemskiftet i 1901 famlede sig frem imod. I 2008 fejrede Romerhusene 50-året for de første ‘romeres’ indflytning, og ‘Glæden ved at bo’ er skrevet i den anledning som en beretning om bebyggelsens ide og historie, om romerlivet dengang og romerlivet i dag, og om de omstændigheder, som har gjort, at stil og stemning er udviklet og fastholdt gennem årene. Romerhusene, eller Kingohusene, som bebyggelsen hed, indtil det lokale navn vandt hævd, blev straks fra opførelsen kendt som et af Jørn Utzons banebrydende arbejder, og utallige besøgende vidner om fortsat både dansk og international interesse. Interessen samler sig helt naturligt om boligtypen, arkitekturen og bebyggelsens naturområde, som har bevaret en bemærkelsesværdig friskhed samtidig med, at vedligeholdelsen af fællesarealerne igennem alle årene i alt væsentligt er varetaget af beboerne selv. ‘Glæden ved at bo’ er skrevet indefra så at sige. Det vil sige på baggrund af samtaler med Utzon selv, hans tidligere medarbejdere og de første ‘romere’.
