Imagine you're at the height of a fabulous career, but at the age of fifty, you realize that none of it is worth it, and you decide to disappear. You sail into the Caribbean, land on a small and little known island, and after walking south, and far from civilization, you find a job as the custodian of the South Island School, a rickety-old school building that accommodates all twelve grades. You are in heaven. You're beginning to relax. But shortly after your arrival, everything changes.
