The Woman in White

This novel is a sophisticatedly plotted story. It is organised as a chain of 'witness' statements from multiple characters designed to unravel a cunning conspiracy against innocent women by a pair of memorable aristocratic monsters, Sir Percival Glyde and his devilish companion, the Italian Count Fosco. The novel is ultimately about a perverted aristocrat after a middle-class woman's money that passes to him through their marriage if the woman is declared dead. He is prepared to plot a murder to retain the cash and protect his own secret. Each convolution and partial revelation in the plot drives the reader on to the next intrigue, and the next, disclosing the secret like a series of Russian dolls...disclosing the secret like a series of Russian dolls...
