Beskrivelse af The Manchester Marriage
The Manchester Marriage is a novella written by Elizabeth Gaskell, first published in 1858. The story is set in the industrial town of Manchester in the mid-nineteenth century and explores the themes of love, marriage, and class conflict. The story follows the lives of two sisters, Fanny and Mary Barton. Fanny is married to a wealthy mill owner, while Mary works in a factory and is engaged to a working-class man named Jem Wilson. Fanny is unhappy in her marriage and becomes jealous of Mary's relationship with Jem. She convinces her husband to offer Jem a job at the mill, hoping to break up the relationship. However, Jem and Mary's love for each other is stronger than Fanny's scheming. They eventually marry, despite the disapproval of their families and the class differences between them. Fanny, on the other hand, realizes the error of her ways and tries to make amends for her actions. The Manchester Marriage is a poignant and insightful portrayal of the social and economic conditions of Victorian England. Gaskell's vivid descriptions of the industrial town and its inhabitants provide a powerful backdrop for the story of love and sacrifice. The novella is a testament to Gaskell's skill as a writer and her ability to capture the complex emotions of her characters.Alice stood still in perplexed wonder. What did he mean? He had resumed the reading of his newspaper, as if he did not expect any answer; so she found silence her safest course, and went on quietly arranging his breakfast, without another word passing between them. Just as he was leaving the house, to go to the warehouse as usual, he turned back and put his head into the bright, neat, tidy kitchen, where all the women breakfasted in the morning. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
