Beskrivelse af No. 5 John Street (1899)
No. 5 John Street is a novel written by Richard Whiteing and published in 1899. The story is set in London during the late 19th century and revolves around the lives of the residents of a boarding house located at No. 5 John Street. The main character is Mrs. Amelia Greet, the landlady of the boarding house, who is a kind and generous woman, but also fiercely independent and proud. She is loved and respected by her lodgers, who come from different social backgrounds and have their own personal struggles and secrets. The novel explores themes such as social class, gender roles, poverty, and morality, and portrays the daily life of working-class people in Victorian England. The plot is driven by the arrival of a new lodger, Mr. Arthur Constant, a young and handsome artist who becomes the object of admiration and desire for several of the female residents. His presence also triggers a series of events that reveal the hidden tensions and conflicts among the lodgers and challenge their values and beliefs. The novel is praised for its realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the characters and its vivid depiction of the urban landscape of London. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
