Memoirs Of My Life And Writings

Bag om Memoirs Of My Life And Writings

Memoirs Of My Life And Writings is an autobiography written by the renowned historian Edward Gibbon. The book provides a detailed account of his life, starting from his childhood in the 18th century and continuing up until the time of his writing. Gibbon's memoirs are divided into two parts. The first part covers his personal life, including his family background, education, travels, and relationships. The second part focuses on his literary career, detailing the research and writing process for his most famous work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.Throughout the book, Gibbon provides insights into his personal beliefs and values, as well as his intellectual and philosophical pursuits. He also reflects on the political and cultural landscape of his time, including the French Revolution and the Enlightenment.Memoirs Of My Life And Writings is considered an important historical document in its own right, providing a first-hand account of the life and work of one of the most influential historians of the 18th century. It is also a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of ideas and the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment. My indiscriminate appetite subsided by degrees in the historic line: and since philosophy has exploded all innate ideas and natural propensities, I must ascribe this choice to the assiduous perusal of the Universal History, as the octavo volumes successively appeared. This unequal work, and a treatise of Hearne, the Ductor historicus, referred and introduced me to the Greek and Roman historians, to as many at least as were accessible to an English reader. All that I could find were greedily devoured, from Littlebury's lame Herodotus, and Spelman's valuable Xenophon, to the pompous folios of Gordon's Tacitus, and a ragged Procopius of the beginning of the last century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
