173,95 kr. Amelia Gere Mason developed Women of the French Salons by creating an archive of oral histories of women who participated in the salons. She also poured through letters, original manuscripts, memoirs and other writings of participants. Mason credits the salon culture with assisting French women in developing a strong culture of intellect, independence, knowledge and poise, which allowed for advances both individually-participating in salons helped elevate some women-and for France as a whole, as Mason argues, the salons encouraged modernity and new thought. In this work, Mason focuses on the years 1700-1900, roughly, and admittedly sacrifices some depth for breadth in illustrating how consequential salons were to culture over time. Despite her detailed research, little else is known of the life or work of Amelia Gere Mason.

98,95 kr. Alfred Castner King was known as "the blind poet of Colorado," having lost his eyesight in a mine explosion while working as an assayer in Colorado. After the accident, he moved to Grand Junction where he helped in the construction of apartment buildings, which helped pay the bills while he wrote, played the flute, lectured and traveled around the world. Born in March 1873 in Leslie, Michigan, he spent most of his life in Colorado. He died in Grand Junction in September 1941. The Passing of the Storm expresses his deep appreciation for the life and landscapes of the West.

123,95 kr. Popular culture studies are pertinent to many academic fields, ranging from art, music, communications, marketing, and history to political science and anthropology. The subject has had a tremendous impact on research. For example, as political history became less the study of diplomatic history, and as the relevance of all kinds of evidence from neglected topics such as the stage, cinema, sociology and design, and myriad other areas staked their claims, the subject increased enormously in value. A catalyst for the field was the establishment of the Far West Popular Culture Association in 1988. Popular Culture Review, the Far West Popular Culture Association's biannual journal, is chock full of material that is available nowhere else. Westphalia Press and the Policy Studies Organization are proud to bring the collection back into print. Many of the papers originated in the annual meeting of popular culture researchers in Las Vegas, started in 1968, which happily continues and brings people from all over the world to ponder a wide variety of topics; so much so that is hard to think of a problem or policy that the journal does not have value in illuminating. Its insights have long come of age and become an essential tool in the scholar's repertoire.

It was preceded by gatherings at the home of Joseph Henry, the great scientist whose discoveries laid the foundations for advances in magnetism and electromagnetism. Since 1887 it has met at the Cosmos Club, in whose founding the Philosophical members played a large part. In 1878, when the Cosmos was founded, there was fear that the Philosophical would start an alternative club, so all the present members of the Philosophical were invited to join as founding members of the Cosmos. This 1881 volume demonstrates the extraordinary history of the Society. Noting that more than 200 consecutive meetings had been held, it includes an address by E.M. Gallaudet on deafness, by John Wesley Powell on the limits to the use of data, and no less than two addresses by Alexander Graham Bell. No other society in Washington has maintained such high standards for so many years. Its Friday night gatherings have survived the turbulence of war and depression and retain their relevance: the 2234th meeting in spring of 2014 presented the Nobel laureate Craig Mello.

123,95 kr. William Rosenau (1865-1943) was born in Wolstein, Germany, and then emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 11. Like his father, he went on to enter the rabbinate, studying at the University of Cincinnati and later the Hebrew Union College, a center for Reformed Judaism. He first served as a rabbi at Temple Israel in Omaha, but after three years, he moved to Baltimore to serve as a rabbi at Congregation Oheb Shalom, where he ministered for over fifty years with distinction. He was known for introducing English into the services, as well as being an ardent anti-Zionist. Rosenau was involved heavily in the development of social services in Maryland as well as in Reformed Judaism. He served on the Maryland Society for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, the Baltimore School Board, Board of Prisoners Aid Association, Board of Jewish Education, and the Maryland Commission for the Higher Education of Negroes, among other organizations. He also founded the Jewish Welfare Board. He wrote a great deal as well. In addition to Jewish Ceremonial Institutions and Customs, he also produced Jewish Biblical Commentators (1904); Jewish Education (1912); Book of Consolation (1914); and The Rabbi in Action (1937). His papers are held at the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati

258,95 kr. This cleverly illustrated volume by Alfred Noyes offers a literary selection of poetry that reference fairies in all their shapes and forms. Along with works by Noyes, The Magic Casement also features selections by William Shakespeare, Rudyard Kipling and G. K. Chesterton. Noyes allows the reader to traverse new, fantastic worlds filled with water lilies, humor, love and magic. Alfred Noyes (1880-1958) was a prolific writer who was able to move successfully across several genres. Though he began in poetry, he also wrote screenplays, science fiction novels, ballads and short stories. He did a great deal of traveling and lecturing, spending time in his birth country of England as well as the United States, Canada, various points in South America, and eventually returning to the Isle of Wight where he spent his final years. He wrote numerous works, including The Loom of Y ears (1902), a biography, William Morris (1908), Some Aspects of Modern Poetry (1924), The Last Man (1940) and his autobiography, Two Worlds for Memory (1953). This edition has large margins to allow for reader notations.

163,95 kr. Gold and blood, Indians and pioneers, criminals and vigilantes! These are terms that have captivated the imagination of America for generations. Nevertheless, authentic, first-hand accounts of the vigilantes have been few indeed. The reason is plain: no one who helped to dispense the rough and salutary justice of the frontier thought it discreet to tell what they knew. But after the passing of the years, when time healed many wounds, William J. McConnell, once Governor of Idaho and also United States Senator, came forth with a story that makes the blood leap. In matter-of-fact fashion, and as vividly as if he were relating events of the day before yesterday, he tells of the overland journey to the Coast, of placer mining in California shortly after the wild days of '49, of homesteading in Oregon, and of farming and prospecting in Idaho. Most unusual and interesting of all, he relates the inside story of the secret Vigilantes, who restored control of territorial affairs for the people of Idaho when criminals and their satellites in office had made a mockery of the processes of justice and government. This edition is dedicated to John Cooper, bibliophile and ever curious scholar-enthusiast for American history and the story of Westward Movement.

118,95 kr. Originally published in 1898, Black Rock: A Tale of the Selkirks was written by Rev. Dr. Charles William Gordon, using the penname Ralph Connor. Gordon was a leader in the Presbyterian and then later on the United Church, so he wanted to protect his status and keep both roles separate. However, his religious and personal beliefs strongly motivated his writings. For example, Gordon was interested in church reform, and his writings on the matter of unifying churches eventually lead to the creation of the United Church of Canada in the 1920. Gordon was born in Ontario, Canada in a community largely composed of Scottish immigrants. His father was a reverend, and as such, Gordon's life became deeply infused with his religious teachings. Gordon went on to study theology at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1886. Gordon's work sheds light on the callous way missionaries viewed the natural beauty of western Canada and the disregard they held for multiple Native tribes that inhabited those areas, their religious beliefs or way of life.

108,95 kr. Herman Hueg wrote four books on confections and baking, including Ornamental Confectionery and the Art of Baking in All its Branches (1905), and Book of Designs for Bakers and Confectioners (1896). Hueg was a renounced baker and confectioner. He expanded his reach by moving into selling tools and other implements for bakers to help replicate the skilled work, such as molds and stencils. This approach is taken in this volume, which begins with a series of recipes for sugar spinning, caramels, nut bars, taffy, ice cream, bonbons, syrups and more. The latter portion of the book has several pages dedicated to interesting baking implements, which are nicely illustrated.

188,95 kr. Waterman Spaulding Chapman Russell, wrote under the much abbreviated name, W. S. C. Russell (1871-1918). Though a many year resident of New Hampshire, he enjoyed traveling, particularly to Iceland. He was fascinated with the country, its fire and ice and sagas, and surprised by the scant ethnographic, geological, or other studies of it. He took it upon himself to study the area, and wrote multiple books on Iceland, including Askja, A Volcano in the Interior of Iceland (1917). Russell spent a great deal of time in Iceland, living there for a while, and because of this, he felt his accounts of the region and its people were superior. He energetically encouraged others to visit, study and learn more about what he felt was one of the most fascinating places in the world.

178,95 kr. Poverty in America too often goes unnoticed, and disregarded. This perhaps results from America's general level of prosperity along with a fairly widespread notion that conditions inevitably are better in the USA than elsewhere. Political rhetoric frequently enforces such an erroneous notion: "the poor live better in America than the middle class elsewhere," "America has the best health care in the world," "income inequality is a sign of 'freedom'," and the like. With American poverty increasing, social mobility decreasing, and income inequality growing it has become urgent that our society direct its attention to poverty as one of the country's most troublesome issues. Poverty and Public Policy helps to focus that attention worldwide; this book, Poverty in America will help to emphasize the issue in this country. Max J. Skidmore (Ph.D., University of Minnesota) teaches at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he is University of Missouri Curators' Professor of Political Science, and Thomas Jefferson Fellow. He has been Distinguished Fulbright Lecturer in India, where he was Director of the American Studies Research Centre in Hyderabad, and has been Senior Fulbright Scholar at the University of Hong Kong. He has published over two dozen works on numerous topics, including Social Security and its Enemies (1999), Securing America's Future: A Bold Plan to Preserve and Expand Social Security (2008), Bulwarks Against Poverty: Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act (2014), and Presidents, Pandemics, and Politics (forthcoming, 2016).

83,95 kr. Though he lived over 500 years ago, Captain John Smith's life is still much discussed. He was born in 1580 in England, and at sixteen, after his father's death, Smith set off for a life at sea. He fought under various flags and found himself knighted by the Prince of Transylvania, but later captured and sold as a slave. He would escape and return to England by 1604. Two years later he was on an expedition set to colonize the New World under the Virginia Company of London. The journey took over four months before they first landed in Virginia. In that time, Smith was charged with mutiny and nearly executed. They would later settle in Jamestown, which was disastrous because of the swampy region, disease, insufficient food, and generous malnutrition. Smith spent a great deal of time navigating for food what is now known as the Chesapeake Bay area, and developed detailed maps as a result. It 1609 as a result of a injury he returned to England for medical treatment. In 1614 he sailed for the United States again, but to what is now known as New England, creating a map of the region that replaced the Native American place names with those suggested by Charles I. In 1615, on a second attempt to return, he was briefly captured by French pirates, escaped and then remained in England until his passing in 1631. His life continues to be a source of great scholarly controversy, particularly around his relationship to Pocahontas. This seminal lecture by Charles Poindexter illustrates some of these points of contention.
