A narrative exhibition history traces his reception, and features a number of rare or previously unpublished images.Bruce Nauman was born in Indiana in 1941 and raised near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He studied math, music and physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before switching his major to visual art, and received an MA in sculpture from the University of California, Davis, in 1966. In 1979 he moved to New Mexico, where he continues to reside. Nauman's work has been the subject of two previous retrospectives, in 1972 and 1994. In 2009 he represented the United States at the Venice Biennale, where he won the Golden Lion.

The result of research conducted on two fronts--conservation and curatorial--the catalogue offers a reconsideration of the cut-outs by exploring a host of technical and conceptual issues: the artist's methods and materials and the role and function of the works in his practice; their economy of means and exploitation of decorative strategies; their environmental aspects; and their double lives, first as contingent and mutable in the studio and ultimately made permanent, a transformation accomplished via mounting and framing. Paul Klee (1879-1940) was an extraordinary draftsman, printmaker, teacher and theoretician with a singular style whose work greatly impacted the development of twentieth-century art. Klee's prints demonstrate, more fully than his works in any other medium, his remarkable evolution from a traditionalist to one of the most daring innovators of modern art. This limited-edition facsimile of The Prints of Paul Klee, originally published by The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1947, presents 40 of Klee's etchings and lithographs from MoMA's collection, ranging in date from 1903 to 1931 and each printed on a separate sheet of stiff card, eight of which are in color. Accompanied by a 40-page booklet featuring an essay by James Thrall Soby (then Chairman of the museum's Department of Painting and Sculpture), and a new text by Christophe Cherix, MoMA's Chief Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books, the prints are encased in a cloth-covered and ribbon-bound box. This unique and luxurious portfolio is being reissued for the first time since its original publication, and is available in a limited edition of 2,000 numbered copies.

A 75th-anniversary facsimile edition of one of the most significant photobooks ever publishedMore than any other artist, Walker Evans invented the images of essential America that we have long since accepted as fact, and his work has influenced not only modern photography but also literature, film and visual arts in other mediums. The original edition of American Photographs was a carefully prepared letterpress production, published by The Museum of Modern Art in 1938 to accompany an exhibition of photographs by Evans that captured scenes of America in the early 1930s. As noted on the jacket of the first edition, Evans, "photographing in New England or Louisiana, watching a Cuban political funeral or a Mississippi flood, working cautiously so as to disturb nothing in the normal atmosphere of the average place, can be considered a kind of disembodied, burrowing eye, a conspirator against time and its hammers." This seventy-fifth anniversary edition of American Photographs, made with new reproductions, recreates the original 1938 edition as closely as possible to make the landmark publication available for a new generation. American Photographs has fallen out of print for long periods of time since it was first published, and even subsequent editions--two of which altered the design and typography of the book in small but significant ways--are often available only at libraries and rare bookstores. This version, like the fiftieth-anniversary edition produced by the Museum in 1988, captures the look and feel of the very first edition with the aid of new digital technologies. Walker Evans (1903-1975) took up photography upon his return to New York in 1927, following a year in Paris when his aspiration to become a writer withered in the shadow of Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Joyce. In 1935, Evans was commissioned by the Farm Security Administration to photograph the effects of the Great Depression in the Southeast. During this time he took many of the photographs that appeared in his collaboration with James Agee, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), a book which has become a defining document of that era. Evans joined the staff of Time magazine in 1945 and shortly thereafter became an editor at Fortune, where he stayed for the next two decades. In 1964, he became a professor at the Yale University School of Art, where he taught until his death in 1975.

Just Above Midtown, or JAM, was an art gallery and self-described laboratory for experimentation led by Linda Goode Bryant that foregrounded African American artists and artists of color. Open from 1974 to 1986, it was a place where an expansive idea of contemporary art flourished and debate was cultivated. The gallery offered early opportunities for artists recognized as pivotal figures in late-20th-century art--including David Hammons, Butch Morris, Senga Nengudi, Lorraine O'Grady and Howardena Pindell--as well as a nonhierarchical approach to art that welcomed artists without stylistic proscription. Published in conjunction with the first museum exhibition to focus on this gallery and its ongoing impact, this book showcases rarely seen material from JAM's history--artworks, ephemera and photographs--that collectively document the gallery's communal and programmatic activities.
