Most of the author's extended family members are South Carolinians. Yet she grew up and attended college in North Carolina (Duke University), and afterwards she moved to Connecticut for her graduate degree (Yale University) and her college teaching career at Fairfield University. In mid-life, she began to hear the opinion that "slavery is America's original sin". That was when she learned belatedly, from a cousin, that her ancestors in South Carolina- both maternal and paternal - had indeed owned slaves. both startled and connected, she set about to research the history of her mother's family. For several decades she explored her family's ancestral records, relevant church histories, public documents, private letters, and the extensive scholarship about the phenomenon of slavery in America. More important, she began a series of visits to her South Carolina relatives, who had lived through a wide range of opinions about race relationships and slavery. The ensuing discussions about family history were crucial to her journey of discovery. In exploring her own family's experience with race and slavery, she found that common stereotypes are not the rule. There were no Simon LeGree cruel-slaveholder figures like those who still populate our films, nor the widespread fear of black people which many believe to be a legacy of slavery. Only rarely did she find the too-sweet condescension that at times marks the attitude of whites toward blacks these days. She learned that in the matter of race relationships, reality can grow past common expectations and become more variable and more surprising. She learned that the racial traumas of our country's past may be evolving to become more manageable, more familiar, and even calmer. Our country's briar-patch tangle of race, aggravated by the traumatic history of slavery, may be evolving to become more "at home". Less dangerous, more understandable, and more realistic. That would be a desirable goal. Certainly, we cannot declare victory over racial strife, but we can embrace hope.

This is the story of my journey through schizo-affective-disorder and melancholic depression and about finding a path leading to healing and well-being.It is about childhood sexual abuse, unhelpful teachings, depression, confusion and vulnerability.Yet, it is also about love, hope, joy and faith and how I rediscovered the light at the end of the tunnel, walked to it and continued, both inward and outward. In turn, this led to finding my true self (the essential self, my centre) and ultimately, to a sense of God's presence and action. My aim has been to understand and explain the processes of healing that I, with the help and support of many others, have undertaken and lived through. To be able to free myself from the trap of mental illness, I needed to understand how abuse, put downs, fear and shame (as in this sense of not being "good" enough) have shaped my personality and the effects they still exerted on me as an adult. This led me to reconfigure my thinking, no less.In this book, I have tried to articulate how my healing unfolded. I believe the writing of it has helped me to turn some of the determinants of my life from negative to constructive and my state of being from despair to joy.I am sharing this story in the hope that you (the reader) may find your light too!

The book is M.P. Prabhakaran's way of speaking truth to power. It's a collection of some of the articles that appeared in The East-West Inquirer, an online monthly, of which he is editor and publisher."Your pen is your biggest enemy." That's the kind of warning Prabhakaran says he used to receive from his friends whenever they found an article too provocative. Pointing to the topic of the article, those well-meaning friends would add: "Why bother, if it doesn't affect you in any way?"In response, Prabhakaran would throw the question back at them, and then add: "History is replete with examples of the disastrous consequences of that kind of attitude." He would remind them that the powers that be got away with the atrocious things they did because people were too scared to speak up or those things did not affect them personally. To emphasize the latter point, he would draw their attention to the immortal words of Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller. The words, as translated by Bob Berkovitz, are: When the Nazis arrested the Communists, I said nothing; after all, I was not a Communist. When they locked up the Social Democrats, I said nothing; after all, I was not a Social Democrat. When they arrested the trade unionists, I said nothing; after all, I was not a trade unionist. When they arrested the Jews, I said nothing; after all, I was not a Jew.When they arrested me, there was no longer anyone who could protest.

This book was begun in 2015 and was about 80% completed when I decided I was too old to write another book, so I put it in a box and forgot about it. A few months ago, I was cleaning out the garage and discovered the box and reread the manuscript. I felt that God was leading me to complete it. The manuscript was originally typed in WordPerfect, and I was told that it couldn't be converted. I found my friend, who had excellent computer skills, and my thumb drive which had the entire manuscript on it. She took it home, converted the files, and sent them back to me so that I could edit them. It just seemed like a "God-thing."I am ninety-one years old and a daily quiet time has been a part of my life for many years. I have used all the suggestions made in these thirty-one day devotionals. Music has been especially important to me in my quiet time. The words of the old hymns hold much wisdom and the newer praise songs bring me close to God. I pray as you journey through these thirty-one days to wellness, that you will experience a new depth of physical, mental, social and spiritual health.

Advent: A Season of WonderA season of anticipation: " What would you feel like if you knew that soon-very soon you would have the opportunity to accept an offering of complete amnesty for all your mistakes and debts, even those inadvertent ones made out of ignorance? This would create an eagerly awaited point in time. It would offer an eagerly anticipated sense of incredible release from all doubts and fears. This would be a jubilant event and a fantastic opportunity for expressions of joy and freedom."A season of expectation: "We live with expectations every day and many times, by the time we reach the conclusion, we find that many of our expectations came about in unexpected ways. For those of faith, we have God-given promises, and while we think we know how these things will come to be, God continues to suprise us. Regularly we find our expectations confounded time and time again by God. Not only does He do things in His time, He does them in His own way, many times to ends we do not foresee."A wonderful season: "Advent is that wonderful anticipatory season when we look forward to celebrating the coming of Christ. Isn't it marvelous that God, after so long, deigned to come again in a form that we would be able to walk and talk with without special precautions? Consider the magnitude of the love that our God has shown for us; he sought us out and is continuing to seek His children wherever they have wandered. In this act, he seeks only to persuade, not to coerce or force our return to the joy of his companionship."

Fulfilling Your Heart's Desire is filled with many heartfelt thoughts and ideas that are so true in Life. Many of the stories I have experienced in my own life and I'm sure that many have had some of the same experiences. Life goes on every day while we are in the middle of changes, hopes and wishes in our minds or in our hearts. I've written this book to help all that may be wondering what has gone wrong or keeps us feeling down or helpless. This is a message that will help you to learn to listen to your quiet voice within, that we many times ignore. The quiet voice leads us to our dreams and protects us from the negatives of evilness and hopelessness. My wish is that you feel blessed and know that your hopes and wishes come from within and never steer you wrong.

The stories in `The Arrow of Justice' portray all facets of human behaviour - their strengths and their weaknesses. The noble integrity of Joshua in honouring his treaty with the Gibeonites; the anguish and frustration of the childless woman, Hannah; the immense courage of Jonathan when facing the better-equipped Philistines; the incredible bravery of David's general, Joab in the conquest of Jerusalem; the sheer malice of Doeg in annihilating an entire community; the diplomatic skills of Chushai in thwarting the efforts of Absolom to overthrow his father David; the treachery of Gechazi to his master Elisha and the tragic naivety of the last king of Israel, Zedekiah. They also demonstrate that the Bible is not just a history of the ancient people of Israel. It is a guide to the relationship between man and his Creator Who is concerned with universal justice and morality. Accordingly, in `The Arrow of Justice', the author briefly addresses the question `Why does God allow cruelty in His world?

As a child, Maria Luisa Jimenez Edwards wanted to be a missionary. It held an indescribable allure for her, an intrinsic pull that was aching to spread the Good News of Jesus. In the pages of this book, join her as she embarks on a personal and spiritually-challenging journey to the jungles of Ecuador. It is virtually impossible to describe a missionary life meaningfully to someone who has never experienced it. She wants to encourage readers to find their own paths to follow God as others, in the midst of utmost poverty, have found. As she wrote these stories she was inspired and challenged anew. Years of participation in the western lifestyle has weakened a passionate faith in a God of power and miracles. From the story of a village of destitute women who dropped everything to come to the aid of a grandmother dying of cancer, to the family who already had seven children but chose to accept an orphan, you will also be inspired by the faith of those who rely on God alone. You will see opportunities to be a part of the miracle if you open your eyes to God's vision. The Love and Power of God proves that His Word conquers all, bringing people together to arm themselves with unconditional love, achieving wonders for themselves, their families and communities.
