The only way to find out the contents of a volume is to read it. The chapters herein contained have thrust themselves into my mind as I have read and traveled and thought on existing world conditions. There is a kind of optimism among men that arises out of an eagerness for what they call "progress." In times of peace and supposed prosperity men largely ignore facts, as they really exist. We by no means shut our eyes to the good that is in the world, but in this volume we, are thinking and writing of the tremendous drift toward evil, and what we believe means a crisis in world history. We confine our observations, however, largely to these United States. There is a strange portend in the atmosphere, a kind of suspense. Philosophers and statesmen hardly dare to prognosticate what the near future holds. There is a very general conviction among thoughtful people that present conditions cannot exist for long; there must be a turning back to practical living, to economy, to the fear of God and an altruistic attitude toward mankind, or a fearful crash of modern civilization. The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits INTRODUCTION There is a body of central truths, which belong to the whole of Evangelical Christendom, which are held to be normative by all who maintain the historic Christian Faith. Within the Evangelical Christian position there are also legitimate differences of emphasis with respect to some of these things held in common. It has frequently been these differing emphases, which have enabled the several Christian denominations to enrich the Church's understanding of her total message. Asbury Theological Seminary stands in the mid-stream of historic Christian Evangelicalism. It also maintains, as its distinctive message, a special emphasis upon the doctrinal principles, which took shape in the eighteenth century in the Wesleyan movement. As an interdenominational, confessional institution, it believes that these Distinctives are worthy of sharing with the Church Ecumenical. At the Fortieth Anniversary of Asbury Theological Seminary, it has been thought appropriate to issue this volume, setting forth, with what we hope may be a vivid freshness, four of the Seminary's doctrinal emphases. They are: the Wesleyan Doctrine of Sin, the Wesleyan understanding of the Atonement, the Wesleyan Doctrine of the Witness of the Spirit, and the Wesleyan Doctrine of Entire Sanctification. It is with the hope that these presentations may impress the reader with the contemporary relevance of these Wesleyan distinctives, and with the prayer that they may serve to build Christ's Church, that this volume is presented as part of an Anniversary Trilogy.

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits INTRODUCTION For more than half a century the name Henry Clay Morrison was a familiar one in the "holiness movement." From my early youth he was upheld by members of my family as an exemplary preacher. It was as his name was mentioned in prayer at our family altar that I received my personal call to the Christian ministry. Brief acquaintance with Morrison during his intermittent visits to the campus while I was a student at Asbury Theological Seminary increased my interest in knowing more about this man. The two full-length books purporting to tell his life's story left me feeling as though I had been presented torn fragments of a picture, many parts of which were still missing. The discovery, in 1946, of Morrison's diaries opened the door of research in an effort to answer my questions. This research culminated in a doctoral dissertation, "The Life, Theology, and Influence of Henry Clay Morrison," presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Oklahoma. The present publication is based entirely upon the previous research. I am greatly indebted to the officials of the Pentecostal Publishing Company, Asbury College, and Asbury Theological Seminary for the many courtesies they have shown me. I also wish to express appreciation to my major professor, Dr. John S. Ezell and to Dr. Alfred B. Sears, also of the history department of the University of Oklahoma. My greatest debt, however, is to my wife, Marjorie MacKellar Wesche. Without her moral support and encouragement both in the original research and now during the period of re-writing, the work could not have been brought to completion. Percival A. - Fiftieth Anniversary Scholarly Essays
133,95 kr. The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE As part of Asbury Theological Seminary's 90th Anniversary, First Fruits Press decided the timing was right to republish some of the past works created by the Seminary during the celebrations of its 40th and 50th Anniversaries. During the academic year of 1973-1974, the Seminary's 50th Anniversary, President Frank B. Stanger encouraged the celebration through two different series of lectures. The first was to assign various faculty members key theological topics and have them present scholarly papers at Estes Chapel throughout the year. These papers were separately published in The Asbury Seminarian at the time, but never together as a collection, until now. These papers are presented here in the order in which they were given. Some unnamed librarian in the B.L. Fisher Library collected the typed papers and had them bound together with a flyer about the 50th Anniversary celebration. Finding this volume was the event that encouraged us to publish this collection as a new edition. Many of the names in this volume are illustrious names from Asbury's past that will be familiar to many alumni. I have the fortunate pleasure to know two of these men who are still present at Asbury Theological Seminary in this our 90th year. Both Dr. Kenneth C. Kinghorn and Dr. Robert E. Coleman are retired, but still active on campus and occasionally teaching. Their passion for the Kingdom of God is still evident in their lives today as a testimony of the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives through the teaching ministry of Asbury Theological Seminary. The second special series of lectures encouraged by Dr. Stanger occurred during the week of March 11-15, 1974. Although no written papers or sermons are available for publication, these lecture were recorded and are now available electronically on First fruits Press under the Heritage Material (LINK). Four important names in the history of the Church of the 20th Century were present on campus at the same time. Anglican theologian and scholar of the New Testament, C.F.D. Moule (1908-2007) from Cambridge University came and spoke on the topic "Whither Christology?" The Anglican missionary, bishop, and scholar of Church History, Stephen Neill (1900-1984) gave a presentation on "Whither Mission?" One of the greatest American Methodist theologians, Dr. Albert C. Outler (1908-1989), known for his scholarship of Wesley, spoke on the topic, "Wither Wesleyan Theology?" Bishop Roy C. Nichols (1918-2002), the first African-American bishop of the United Methodist Church, conducted preaching during the week. It must have been an inspiring week for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to hear these four influential voices of the Church. As we enter our 90th year as a Seminary, we face a world with many new challenges, but still impacted by the same problems of sin. Asbury Theological Seminary has always held fast to the idea that our hope lies in Jesus Christ and the Good News preached through scripture. These essays are a reminder, that even in this new millennium, some truths never change. As we look to the future, let us also remember the heritage from which we come as we read these timely messages from forty year ago. Robert Danielson, PhD. Editor, The Asbury Journal

- An Account of the Spontaneous Revivals at Asbury College in 1950 and 1958
83,95 kr. The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits INTRODUCTION In a day when unprecedented numbers of people have a form of religion while at the same time the church seems unable to stem the rising tide of degeneracy that threatens the land, the question might be raised: Why this paradox? Should not the church have influence for righteousness in proportion to her numbers? However one may seek to answer this question, it is obvious that what we need is not more religion, but more power. In short, we need real revival. For this reason, the account after spontaneous revivals at Asbury College in 1950 and 1958 is very timely and provocative of thought. It shows what God can do when given a chance. The particular manifestations of these visitations of God may differ from others, for no two revivals are exactly alike. However, basic principles are reflected here which recur in all genuine spiritual awakenings. The sense of need, effectual prayer, confession and repentance, imparting of new life, infilling of the Holy Spirit and compulsion to tell the good news to others; these are relevant to every age. The authors of these stories are well-qualified to speak, having experienced the events which they describe. Henry C. James, an alumnus, was himself converted during the revival of 1950; and Paul Rader, student leader on the Asbury campuses, was an active participant in the 1958 awakening. They are thus enabled through their close association with these revivals to transmit much of the moving drama of those days. It is my hope that those who read these pages will catch something of the spirit which motivated its writing. But even more, I trust that many will be inspired to pray, to work and to believe God for revival today. The power of God is the same. The conditions for revival have not changed. We are the only variable factors in experiencing greater things than described in these pages.Trusting that this book will be used to open our eyes, I join the Psalmist in praying: "Wilt thou not revive us again; that thy people may rejoice in thee? "(Psalms 85:6). Robert E. Coleman, PhD Sollie E. McCreless Professor of Evangelism Asbury Theological Seminary --- CONTENTS Introduction Preface 1. My Pepole 2. A Needy People 3. A Praying People 4. - An Historical Reader of Holiness Writers
288,95 kr. The digital copies of these recordings are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Holiness is living life, as God would have us live it. For flawed human beings, this is impossible without the power of the Holy Spirit and a strong commitment to prayer, studying scripture, and repentance with self-reflection, along with other spiritual disciplines. No Christian tradition has a monopoly on teaching holiness. In fact, it has been a part of the teachings of the Church from the very start. This book brings together many Christian writers from many different traditions, but all with a common focus on how to live a holy life. From the Romafn Catholics, Brother Lawrence and Blaise Pascal to Puritans, Methodists, Baptists, and early Pentecostals, they all have some important lessons to teach those who desire to faithfully follow Christ today. Dr. Robert "Clem" Coleman, who started printing small booklets of excerpts or abridged versions of spiritual classics when he was a professor at Asbury Theological Seminary, edited and wrote introductions for a number of these chapters. He continued this work with many others in producing booklets that were later published by the Billy Graham Center. Dr. Coleman wanted to use many of these writings for teaching a course in discipleship, but was frustrated by the difficulty of locating so many small booklets and reselling them to students. So we gathered permissions from all of the writers we could find, and are now publishing most of this material in one place. Our hope is that this material, being made freely available online, will impact the lives of Christians all over the world. Holiness is what we are called to in the Christian journey. Conversion is just an important step on a much longer journey toward holiness. Never before have the needs of the world cried out for the People of God to live out their calling to be a light to the nations, as it has in this generation. Yet many believers still have not heard the message of living a holy life for a holy God. Consumerism, materialism, individualism, rationalism, and the rejection of absolute truth have all led to a world desperately in need of the classical teachings of Christian holiness. This is just a small attempt to reintroduce these teachings once again. Read and reflect on these teachings and the lives of those who made such an impact in their own time. May their words inspire a new generation of Christians and light a fire in their hearts that will kindle a passion for holiness that will sweep over the earth!

173,95 kr. The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE This book is a compilation. The aim has been to bring together in one volume the very best that has been written by the very best writers on the various phases of the doctrine of Entire Sanctification between the year 1739 and the present. While many of these chapters have never appeared in print before, others have been published in the columns of various papers and magazines and in tracts and pamphlets, and are republished here with the consent of the writers. The doctrine of entire sanctification has always had a place, not only in the theological text-books, but also in the history, biography and current literature of Methodism. The position of any branch of the Methodist Church upon this doctrine, and its attitude toward the experience implied, are not matters of doubt when this literature of the church is read without prejudice. It has been the purpose of the author of this book to bring together a series of papers which will set forth in the most complete and comprehensive way the doctrine as taught in the Methodist Church, as experienced by the Methodist people, and as it has affected the church during the period mentioned in the title. For about twenty years there has been much contention in the M. E. Church, South, over this doctrine and experience. The claims of the so-called Holiness People have been strongly and conclusively maintained. They have proven beyond the possibility of successful controversy that the doctrine is Wesleyan; that it is scriptural and that it is confirmed by multitudes of our very best men and women. But the facts and arguments by which these points have been established have been widely scattered through books and papers, very few of which could be in the hands of any one person. We believe the reader will here find the most compendious statement of Methodist teachings upon this interesting topic that can be found anywhere. We are persuaded that many persons have felt the need of a hand-book which would give them the very information herein contained and that they will approve the efforts of the author in his attempt to meet the demand. Our thanks are due and are hereby tendered to all who have furnished papers, or have otherwise aided us in preparing the book. And now for each of our readers we earnestly pray: "The very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do." - 1 Thes. 5: 23 b.

They discussed adapting the Christian Endeavor Society pledge and program to meet the unique needs of sailors. Antoinette Jones sent the idea to the Christian Endeavor headquarters in Boston and was given permission from the society to try out this new idea." (pg. 8) ?"The first Floating Christian Endeavor Society was established sometime in 1890. Wiseman indicates that the first society was established on the Revenue Cutter Gallatin, although Showalter points to church records, where Antoinette Jones recorded the establishment of a society on May 12, 1890 on the Revenue Cutter Dexter." (pg. 11) "In a short span of eleven years, the work had grown tremendously, not due to the work of traditional missionaries or an ordained chaplaincy. It grew because of to the flexibility of a lay-led movement accompanied by the transient nature of the mission field and a genuine passion for Christ in its members. The movement quickly spread internationally as well, with Clark mentioning Floating Christian Endeavor Societies on British and Japanese vessels." (pg. 48)

- A Handbook of Methods for Junior Christian Endeavor Workers
153,95 kr. The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE THE preparation of this Manual would have been quite impossible for me had I not received the most cordial assistance from Junior workers all over the world. In response to a request printed in The Golden Rule, letters from Junior superintendents fairly rained down upon me, each expressing the great need of a manual of Junior methods, and the desire of the writer to co-operate. I wish it were possible to print here the names of these kind friends, who are more the authors of this book than I am. I can at least express thus publicly my sense of obligation to them, and my sincere gratitude. Will not all Junior workers take up and continue this partner- ship? New and useful ways of working are constantly devised by Junior superintendents. If you will send to me, at the office of The Golden Rule, Boston, Mass., an account of any helpful plan not incorporated in these pages, it will be published at once in the international Christian Endeavor organ, and be inserted in future editions of the Junior Manual. It is too much to hope that this book, even though a large amount of labor has been spent upon it, will prove entirely satisfactory to every one, and in all of its forty chapters. I have done my best, however, to make it straightforward, practical, and to the point; and I shall be richly rewarded if the noble Junior Christian Endeavor workers, whom I so much honor, are in any way inspired and helped by these pages. AMOS R. WELLS. BOSTON, March 22, 1895.
