The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE The wise man said: "Of making many books there is no end." We wonder what he would say in these days if he were living. Still they multi-ply, and we have ventured to throw out another into the stream of time. Where there is a great need it is right to look for u supply. While many authors are writing valuable books on this great and important question of holiness, we know of no work that takes up the subject of these wrested Scriptures used by many in opposing this second work of grace. We trust that this little work may fill a place in this great field of full salvation. All over the land objections are being raised against the possibility of living a sanctified life, and the Word of God is being sadly perverted to substantiate these errors. In this work we hope to accomplish three things: 1, to help those who resort to these texts, wresting them to "their own destruction;" we hope to clear away the fog that seems to hang around them, and by so doing to lead them into the true light; 2, to enable those who are in the .sanctified life to see the Word clearly on these texts, and thus be saved from an overthrow of their faith; 3, and also to enable the sanctified ones to be a blessing to those who are in error. Trusting that the Holy Spirit may bless the work on its mission of light, we send it forth into the world, asking all who may read it to pass it along and pray God to bless the good and overrule all mistakes. W.E.S.

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits FOREWORD As I traveled over the country telling of God's workings through the Kentucky Mountain Holiness Association a number of my friends suggested that I write a book relative to the work. I have endeavored, therefore, in this volume to give a rather complete history of our interdenominational work of faith in the Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. The material has been taken from my diary and from my own remembrance of the various happenings and events. Nothing can be more helpful to the faith of God's children than the evidence of His faithfulness in demonstrating His truth and power in the many answers to prayer found in this book. No greater satisfaction could come to the author than to know that the true incidents and remarkable answers to prayer recorded here have blest and helped those who read this book. I am greatly indebted to dear Mr. and Mrs. C. Kildow Lovejoy for giving me a room in their lovely hotel, "The Ritz," in Paducah, Kentucky, where I could rest and write. The Lord bless them good. The prayers of the pastors, students, and teachers in our Kentucky Mountain Holiness Association in my behalf greatly helped as I wrote. I felt their lift in a remarkable way over the stretch of four hundred and twenty-five miles across the State of Kentucky from Lawson, Breathitt County, to Paducah. Lela G. McConnell

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE The public will pardon the artistic deficiencies in the composition of these addresses, and we trust that an apology will not be necessary for the fact that they were delivered extemporaneously, since they follow a well defined line of thought. If we understand the mind of the average man, he is more interested in a thing of life than a thing of art. The jagged methods of emphasis, rendered perhaps a little more jagged by the vicissitudes of a stenographic report, might be entirely smoothed out if the author were to re-write these lectures in composition form; and the arguments imbedded therein might be more clearly articulated; but they would lose something which they are bound to have derived from the associations of a convention which in denominational complexion and spiritual passion could hardly be duplicated in the Christian world. It may add a mental setting to the thoughts of the serious reader to remind him that the best intellect and the best devotion of every widely known Christian denomination, with the possible exception of the Roman Catholic, was represented in the audience that received these lectures, and that the meetings resulted in much definite blessing; so much that many of the writ ten testimonies have been published, of people who took higher ground in the Karuizawa Convention. It was in deference to the judgment of certain Christian leaders that these messages were re- ported for publication. This was recommended because doctrinally they are representative of one of the standard interpretations of a theme in which all Christendom is acquiring an increased interest; because, while the interpretation of Christian holiness as here presented has borne much good fruit, since the days of John Wesley, the presentation of it in these addresses is ''characterized by breadth of vision, charity and tolerance, without sacrificing those qualities of clearness and aggressiveness which are appreciated by candid men of ail schools.'' Wilmore, Ky. J.P.

The digital copies of this book is available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Under Revision: This grammar has already undergone numbers of revisions over the last 4 years, for which I must thank Mr. Brad Johnson (model language instructor) and his students for their fine-toothed combing of the text. This present publication, the first effort to combine the two semesters of elementary Greek instruction into one volume with full appendices, represents the first half of a full revision. Chapters 1-12 have been brought up the standards of the most recent suggestions. Chapters 13-24 await this latest wave of modification, with all chapters together scheduled to be in their fully revised form by February of 2015. My special thanks goes to Mr. Klay Harrison, whose expertise and enthusiasm for this labor is stamped on every page.Preface: The world does not another Elementary Greek Grammar! There are many fine products on the market that have proven themselves to be useful both in the classroom and for private instruction. The need for this particular grammar arises from the peculiar shape of the MDiv curriculum at Asbury Theological Seminary. Several years ago the faculty adopted a curriculum that required one semester of Greek and one semester of Hebrew, each as preparatory for a basic exegesis course in each discipline. It became clear after several years of trial and error that a "lexical" or "tools" approach to learning Greek and Hebrew was inadequate, no matter how skilled the instructors or how motivated the students. In today's general vacuum of grammatical training in public education across the United States, students typically enter seminary training with no knowledge of how languages work. Any training we might give them in accessing grammatical information through the use of Bible software programs will, we learned, come to naught in the absence of an understanding of just what such information actually means. We agreed that we actually needed to "teach the language itself," at least in some rudimentary fashion, if we hoped students would make sense of grammatical and linguistic issues involved biblical interpretation. The first 12 chapters of this grammar are designed to correspond to the first semester's instructional agenda. In these chapters we introduce all the parts of speech, explain and drill the basic elements of grammar, set forth the larger verb system (excluding the perfect system), teach the tenses of the Indicative Mood only (again, excluding the perfect system), and help students build a vocabulary of all NT words occurring 100 times or more. We also lead students into the NT itself with carefully chosen examples, while at the same time guiding them in each lesson to learn the use of the standard NT lexicon [BDAG] and an exegetical grammar [Wallace's Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics]. We are well aware of the limitations of this approach, but genuinely believe that some instruction along these lines is better than none, and that such an approach provide a foundation for students interested in moving beyond the first semester (into chapters 13-24) into a firmer grasp of the language of the NT

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE Most of the the sermons in this book have been preached in revival meetings, and at the great camp-meetings throughout the nation, and have been blessed of God in helping to lead many souls to salvation through faith in Christ. A large number of my friends in many parts of the country have insisted that I have them published in book form. I am having them published, and am sending them forth with the prayer and hope that they may prove helpful to all those who may read them. I am growing old, and have a desire that this book may carry a message of salvation to hungry human hearts long after I have ceased to speak. If in its pages the reader can find anything of interest and helpfulness I shall be grateful. I want the contents of this book to bear witness through the years to my undying faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal and all-sufficient Saviour. There sermons are but a poor expression of some of the great truths of that Gospel which is the power of God unto salvation. May the Holy Spirit illuminate the minds of those who may read the contents of this book, to discover in our blessed Lord Jesus one able to save to the uttermost all who come to Him. H. C. Morrison

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits FOREWORD It has frequently occurred to me to put down in book form some of the interesting incidents in my long life, as an orphan boy, with something of my conversion, entering the ministry, and the various fields in which I have labored these sixty-three years, preaching throughout this nation and in many countries around the world. Numbers of my friends have asked me to write my Life Story, and I have found it fascinating; one of the most interesting features is the very remarkable part of my Life Story that I could not tell without reflection on others who have been strongly opposed to the work in which I have engaged, the Bible truths I have loved and delighted to preach. I have sought to avoid anything that could possibly give pain to any one who might read what I have written. I have been compelled to leave out much that was interesting to me, as it came up in the refreshing of my memory, and would doubtless, have been interesting to others who are interested in me, but the book is already too large; and here it is. If in its pages the reader can find anything of interest and helpfulness I shall be grateful. H. C. Morrison

The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Who cares about the soul anymore? Contrary to some voices in our secular society, apparently, quite a few people. A recent Newsweek Poll reported that 58 percent of Americans say they feel the need to experience spiritual growth. There is a remarkably widespread hunger for meaning spanning our society. And there is an equally widespread menu of spiritual offerings from which to choose. In the midst of these, one wonders just what is authentic spirituality? In Soul Care, Kenneth J. Collins carefully answers this question and gives clear direction by showing us: -the source of evil-how we construct the self and make it lord over our lives, -the extent of sin-how we are each individually enslaved to the self, -the hope of deliverance-how we can through Christ enter into the kingdom of God, and -the grace of renewal-how we can through the spiritual disciplines abide and flourish in the kingdom of God. Our souls need to be nurtured, no matter where we are in our spiritual journey-uncertain seeker or seasoned saint. Soul Care is about spirituality, Christian living, and discipleship; read and fest on tits rich and varied recipes for growth.
