It is now thirteen years since the first publication of "Calavar," which, apart from the ordinary objects of an author, was written chiefly with a view of illustrating what was deemed the most romantic and poetical chapter in the history of the New World; but partly, also, with the hope of calling the attention of Americans to a portion of the continent which it required little political forecast to perceive must, before many years, assume a new and particular interest to the people of the United States. It was a part of the original design to prepare the way for a history of Mexico, which the author meditated; a design which was, however, soon abandoned. There was then little interest really felt in Mexican affairs, which presented, as they have always done since the first insurrection of Hidalgo, a scene of desperate confusion, not calculated to elevate republican institutions in the opinions of the world. Even the events in Texas had not, at that time, attracted much attention. Mexico was, in the popular notion, regarded as a part of South America, the alter ego almost of Peru, -beyond the world, and the concerns of Americans. There was little thought, and less talk, of "the halls of the Montezumas;" and the ancient Mexican history was left to entertain school-boys, in the pages of Robertson

It is the second volume of the Sheppard Lee series and follows the story of a man who has the ability to transfer his consciousness into the bodies of other people. In this volume, Lee finds himself inhabiting the body of a wealthy plantation owner in the antebellum South. It is a thought-provoking and engaging read for anyone interested in American literature or historical fiction. While I was making these virtuous resolutions, the faithful Abel Snipe came to my bedside, and told me there were divers suffering creatures, widows with nine small children, widowers with fourteen, sick old women, and starving old men, in great need of relief; and so affecting was the picture he drew of their griefs, that the tears rolled from my eyes, and I bade him, if there was any money he could honestly lay his hands on, carry comfort to them all. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 158,95 kr. Robert Montgomery Bird wrote a book titled "Sheppard Lee, Written by Himself." It depicts the tale of Sheppard Lee, a selfish and slothful young man who wakes up in the body of a rich man after sleeping in a field. Lee learns that his newfound money and prestige come with their own set of issues as he gets used to his new existence. He has to cope with his selfish kin, the complexity of high society, and his own moral flaws. Lee keeps changing into several bodies throughout the book, each time encountering a different set of difficulties and lessons. His ability to occupy the bodies of individuals from various social groups, ethnicities, and genders gives him a unique view of the world. With his many changes, Lee gains an understanding of the importance of perseverance, compassion, and selflessness. He learns that as opposed to just seeking riches and position, living a life of meaning and purpose brings genuine satisfaction and contentment. Ultimately, "Sheppard Lee, Written by Himself" is a satirical critique of early 19th-century American culture. It offers a vision of personal development and progress while criticizing the values and beliefs of the period through the technique of body-switching.
