103,95 kr. "An Iceland Fisherman" is a novel by French author Pierre Loti that depicts the romantic but inevitably sad life of Breton fishermen who sail each summer season to the stormy Iceland cod grounds. Literary critic Edmund Gosse characterized "An Iceland Fisherman" as "the most popular and finest" of all Loti's writings." Loti's style is a combination of the French realist school, such as Emile Zola, and a form of literary impressionism. Loti used a simple but fragrantly poetic vocabulary. Somehow, words (as used by him) take on a new value, awakening sensations lying deep within the reader. Loti's characters in "An Iceland Fisherman" are humble and simple working class people, and the incidents are normal every day affairs, dealing with the themes of love and separation. One of Loti's greatest strengths is his depictions of nature, and how he places it on center stage. In "An Iceland Fisherman," Loti adapts some of the Impressionist techniques of contemporary painters, especially Monet, to prose. First published in 1886 as Pêcheur d'Islande, "An Iceland Fisherman" is considered to be a classic of French literature today.

- And Passing Through Muscat - An Account of a Trip to Persia and Oman in 1900
788,95 kr. From 17 April, 1900, to 6 June of that year, Pierre Loti travelled in a private capacity from Bushire on the Persian Gulf, northwards through Shiraz, Persepolis, Isfahan and Tehran, before returning via the Caspian Sea to Europe. This is the personal day-by-day account of his journey, the hardships of the mountainous terrain and the empty desert. Loti excels in his descriptions of the world around him: the sky, the mountains, the fertile plains, the deserted desert. His descriptions of the people he meets, their dress and manners are remarkable. Loti had come from India and on his way to the Gulf, he stopped off at Muscat and his account of this brief visit was published as 'En passant a Mascate' (Passing through Muscat). This is the first English translation of both texts.

285,95 kr. Madame Chrysantheme is a novel written by French author Pierre Loti, first published in 1887. The story is set in Japan and follows the experiences of a French naval officer named Pierre Loti, who is stationed in the country for a few months. During his stay, he falls in love with a Japanese woman named O-Kiku, who is his temporary wife or ""Madame Chrysantheme"" in the Japanese tradition of arranged marriages. The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of Loti's own experiences in Japan, and it provides a vivid portrayal of the country's customs, traditions, and way of life during the late 19th century. The author's descriptions of the scenery, architecture, and people of Japan are both detailed and poetic, and they offer a unique insight into the culture and society of the time.At its core, Madame Chrysantheme is a love story that explores the complexities of cross-cultural relationships and the challenges that come with them. Loti's portrayal of O-Kiku is both tender and respectful, and he presents her as a complex and multifaceted character rather than a mere stereotype. Through the characters of Pierre and O-Kiku, the novel also touches on themes of colonialism, imperialism, and cultural exchange.Overall, Madame Chrysantheme is a beautifully written and thought-provoking novel that offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era and a different way of life.1890. After joining the French Navy, Loti (pen name of Julien Marie Viaud) saw the world from shipboard. He spent long months among the palm groves of the South Seas; he visited the scorching coast of Senegal and the seas of Iceland. A prolific writer, Loti used every strange and exotic scene as a background for his romance novels. Madame Chrysantheme is an impressionistic diary of Loti's trip to Japan, his encounter with a famous Japanese girl and their romance. This romantic tale of travel and adventure in Japan is thought to have influenced Puccini's Madam Butterfly.
