Écoutez, mon enfant, si vous avez confiance en ma tendresse, laissez-moi vous guider dans la vie. À dix-sept ans l'on ne sait juger ni de l'avenir, ni du passé, ni de certaines considérations sociales. Je ne vous ferai qu'une seule observation. Monsieur de Restaud a une mère qui mangerait des millions, une femme mal née, une demoiselle Goriot qui jadis a fait beaucoup parler d'elle. Elle s'est si mal comportée avec son père qu'elle ne mérite certes pas d'avoir un si bon fils. Le jeune comte l'adore et la soutient avec une piété filiale digne des plus grands éloges; il a surtout de son frère et de sa soeur un soin extrême. - Quelque admirable que soit cette conduite, ajouta la comtesse d'un air fin, tant que sa mère existera, toutes les familles trembleront de confier à ce petit Restaud l'avenir et la fortune d'une jeune fille.

Autre étude de femme est une nouvelle composite d'Honoré de Balzac, formée de cinq récits distincts qui sont autant de fables, nouvelles dans la nouvelle. Très proche d'un roman à épisodes sans chronologie, l'ensemble propose certains récits écrits en 1831 et qui figuraient dans les Contes bruns (1832), tels la Grande Bretèche et le Message. D'autres récits y ont été ajoutés entre 1838 et 1842, date de la publication au tome II des Scènes de la vie privée. Le premier récit de De Marsay parut en 1841 dans l'Artiste sous le titre Une Scène de boudoir.

L'avoué entend, pendant la conversation de Mme de Grandlieu avec sa fille Camille, que celle-ci est amoureuse du jeune Ernest de Restaud, fils d'Anastasie de Restaud, née Goriot. Mme de Grandlieu désapprouve cet amour: la mère d'Ernest est dépensière, enlisée dans une relation illégitime avec Maxime de Trailles, pour lequel elle gaspille sa fortune. Derville intervient en faveur de Camille: il démontre qu'Ernest s'est vu attribuer depuis peu l'intégralité de l'héritage familial. Ce récit, qui constitue une mise en abîme d'un type humain du monde balzacien, met en lumière les personnages de Jean-Esther van Gobseck, usurier, et de Maître Derville, avocat en début de carrière. Ces deux personnages, qui jouent un rôle essentiel dans ce roman, reparaissent dans l'ensemble de la Comédie humaine, soit sous forme d'évocation: Gobseck, soit en personne: Maître Derville, que l'on retrouve dans Le Colonel Chabert, Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes et dans de nombreux autres volumes de La Comédie humaine.
