This book, together with Upon Our Own Ground (2008) and Underground Spirit (2010), completes the six-volume historical anthology series on Filipino short stories from 1956 to 2008. The Introduction offers an overview of Filipino short fiction from 1925 to the present.

Orion's belt and other Writings is an unusual first collection of fiction. It not only puts together Abad's five stories, but carries and introductory piece called "The Stick" which presents a disturbing theory of language, fiction, and the creative process, and ends with two essays on the author's workshop with himself on two of his stories.
