Il y retrouve la belle Ivana, qu'il a connue à Paris, et qui se dit menacée par un certain Gaulow. Notre héros apprend bientôt que Gaulow a dérobé les plans secrets de mobilisation. Il part donc avec ses amis pour le repaire du méchant, le Château noir...

Le grand succès de ce roman tient, au-delà de son intrigue, aux quelques éléments surréalistes et poétiques, qui feront notamment l'admiration de Jean Cocteau qui en signera la préface. La porte de la chambre fermée à clef "à l'intérieur", les volets de l'unique fenêtre fermés, eux aussi "à l'intérieur", pas de cheminée. Qui a tenté de tuer Mlle Stangerson et, surtout, par où l'assassin a-t-il pu fuir de la chambre jaune ? C'est le jeune reporter Rouletabille, limier surdoué et raisonnant par "le bon bout de la raison", qui va trouver la solution de cet affolant problème. C'est un roman construit sur une enquête et donc sur la recherche de la vérité. Une phrase mystérieuse dans le roman " Le presbytère n'a rien perdu de son charme, ni le jardin de son éclat " prendra rapidement pour les amateurs le statut de citation culte.
