Todero è il nome proprio della persona, e vuol dir Teodoro; Brontolon non è il nome di famiglia di Todero, ma un adiettivo che deriva da brontolare, soprannome datogli dalle persone che lo conoscono a fondo, e che spiega e mette in ridicolo il di lui carattere inquieto fastidioso, indiscreto. Usavasi un tempo dare ai personaggi delle Commedie de' nomi e de' cognomi tratti dal loro carattere, o dai loro difetti. Per esempio Coviello, Spaccamonti, Asdrubale, Tagliaferro, Gelsomino degli Affettati, e simili; e i personaggi medesimi si chiamavano eglino stessi con questi nomi e con questi cognomi, come se si vantassero delle loro caricature: anche a' giorni nostri vi sono de' Comici che cadono in questo errore. Il bravo, eccellente Tartaglia, che dopo aver fatto per tanti anni il piacere di Roma, è passato a far quello di Venezia, quando parla di se medesimo sulla scena, si chiama il signor Tartaglia: domandate il signor Tartaglia: avete a far con Tartaglia: lasciate fare a Tartaglia ecc. Come mai un uomo può denominarsi egli stesso dal proprio difetto? O come può darsi ad intendere che l'accidente abbia dato ad un uomo un nome o un cognome che combini col suo difetto? In tal caso, credo che un tale cambierebbe il nome, e sfuggirebbe di mettersi da se stesso in ridicolo.
