Beskrivelse af Atalanta in Calydon
Atalanta in Calydon is a play written by Algernon Charles Swinburne, first published in 1865. It is a tragedy based on the Greek myth of Atalanta, a virgin huntress who is forced to marry by her father. The play is set in the ancient Greek city of Calydon and follows the story of Atalanta and the hunt for the Calydonian boar, a monstrous creature sent by the goddess Artemis to wreak havoc on the city. The play explores themes of fate, free will, and the consequences of pride and hubris. It is written in a poetic style and features complex characters, vivid imagery, and intense emotions. Atalanta in Calydon is considered one of Swinburne's most important works and is praised for its lyrical beauty and dramatic power.1875. The poet Swinburne was one of the very few, since the days of Raleigh and Sidney, to come from the aristocracy. He was also well-known for his sexual proclivities and debauched lifestyle. Atalanta (balanced) is a character from ancient Greek mythology. She was from Arcadia, a daughter of Iasus or Schoeneus and Clymene. The episode in her life relating to the Calydonian boar hunt is reprised by Swinburne in this verse tragedy.
