This book is a collection of nine tales of fiction with the title story being about a resolute middle-aged woman bent on meeting the man who thrilled her with the beauty of his trumpet call one evening in Hawaii. Other stories are of a group of young firefighters on a dangerous California fire; of two couples targeted by Mexican outlaws in the Sea of Cortez; of four canoers facing a crisis on a river in the Yukon; of four soldiers on a lark in Tulsa; of a good-hearted business executive and his protege; of an adventurer on a freighter in the South Pacific; of a quaint dweller of the forest; and of a misadventure in the California gold country in the early 1900s. The stories, masterfully told by Wade Morgan, range from tragedy to humor and from fanciful to stark realism, some of which will remind the reader of the works of O. Henry.
